What are you complaining about??

I cried today after the initial shock of whats has happened to Haiti. I cried because of the things I knew to be true: children are dead and mothers are crying, husbands and sons have been lost. Brothers and sisters are seperated by more than space, they are seperated from home, family, and hope.

I cried at the images of childrens bodies laying piled in the streets next to schools, and I cried at the images of women laying dead with shock still emblazened on their faces. I cried because of the blood spilled, and life lost, and hope gone.

I cried because I realized that all of the things that I have been upset about in my life are absolutely minimal and nothing in comparison to the devestation of those who have survived in Haiti. To those in Haiti I am sorry from every fiber in my soul. I can't even begin to imagine a fraction of what you feel but you all are in my prayers as should we all in America.

What happened to individual thought??

Let us first take a look at collectivism; the theory and pratcice that makes that makes some sort of group rather than the individual the fundamental unit of political, social, and economic concern. In theory, collectivists insist that the claims of groups, associations, or the state must normally supersede the claims of individuals." -- Stephen Grabill and Gregory M. A. Gronbacher

Collectivism also attempts to see a group of indiviuals as having a single identity similar to a single person. Take for instance today's media influence on the youth of our nation. They are being shown how deceit and manipulation can get you success and fame; shows like "Survivor," "I Love Money," and "Big Brother. Collectivism often sounds humane because it stresses the importance of human needs. In reality, it is little more than a rationalization for sacrificing you and me to the desires of others. Collectivism kills dreams, kills thought, kills imagination and innovation; it kills everything that makes you and I unique. What a bland world we would live in if collectivism takes over.

"Individualism regards man -- every man -- as an independent, sovereign entity who possesses an inalienable right to his own life, a right derived from his nature as a rational being. Individualism holds that a civilized society, or any form of association, cooperation or peaceful co-existence among men, can be achieved only on the basis of the recognition of individual rights -- and that a group, as such, has no rights other than the individual rights of its members.-- Ayn Rand

Individuals such as Neslon Mandela, Joan of Arc, Mahatma Ghandi, & Fredrick Douglass fought and changed political and social situations in their respective lands forcing people to look at each other as equals and rebelling against oppression. Atristry by such artists as Andre Beauneveu, Michaelangelo, Salvador Dali, and Picasso lead us into their minds seeing things through their visual portals. Innovations by such creative minds of George Washington Carver, Dr. Martin Cooper, Sir John Harrington, Willis Haviland Carrier, and Thomas Eddison have given us the ability to be more productive, less polluted, and gain some comfortability due to their open and creative minds that were not hindered by the process of collectivism.

I will not spend time explaining who each of these individuals above are, you are better by learning yourself, but I will leave you with this.. how would you feel if someone were to always speak for you wether you agreed with them or not? What if someone were to tell you what you were allowed to do and inside of said parameters? You decide.
